Why Should You Pursue a Doctoral Degree?

With exponential growth in business, science and technology, the demand for doctorate-level degrees is sure to increase for years to come, although the number of doctoral degrees awarded is expected to remain flat, according to the National Center for Education Statistics in Washington. And as the children of baby boomers reach college age and opt for a college education, teaching positions for doctorate holders are also likely to increase.

• Flexibility. PhD.s who teach college-level courses can teach in any academic field. In addition, individuals with doctoral degrees who pursue careers in academia will find more research options, lab management positions and post-doctoral positions available to them.

• Prestige. A PhD. is recognized universally as an expert in his or her field of study. And along with the respect commanded by a doctorate, doctoral degree holders enjoy the prestige of being addressed by the esteemed title of "Doctor."

• Doing what you love. Typically, people who pursue doctoral degrees are highly motivated by a passion for their subject matter. More than just fulfilling a program of academic requirements, working toward a doctorate follows a direct path to in-depth, specialized knowledge and commanding expertise in one's chosen field.
