Break Away From the Ordinary and Travel with an Open Mind
Do you travel to the same places every year? Or travel to different places but within the same country? Have you ever visited a place where you don’t speak the language or where you’ve never tasted the local cuisine? Sometimes, the idea can sound daunting, but you’d be amazed at how much fun you can have and how much you’ll learn if you just keep an open mind.
Opening your mind when you travel means that you are ready to experience new things with as few prejudgments as possible. Indeed it is challenging, if not impossible to turn off all of our assumptions about the way that things are, and what is “right” and “wrong”, but if you remind yourself that you are visiting a different culture whose views and perspective of the world is very different from your own, you may discover that what you had originally thought was the right and wrong way to do something was actually quite limited.
Opening your mind starts with opening your eyes. There are so many different levels to the experiences you can have in a place that is very different from where you live and usually travel. These include:
- Learning something new
- Watching or seeing something new
- Doing something new
- Meeting new people
- Eating something new
- And purchasing something new
Usually, you’ll find that the experience is not only a great deal of fun at the time, but it also carries over into your life when you get home again. This doesn’t mean that you’ll start living just like the culture you visit, but you may begin to question some of the things that you have taken for granted, and look at new ways to better the way you live every day.
You may also find it easier to get along with new people, and enjoy the company of the people you already know, as you will be more experienced in living among people who view the world differently than you.
Try to open your mind and visit new places as frequently as you can. The more experience you have with immersing yourself in a place that is entirely different from what you know, the better you’ll be able to get the most out of your life back home. |
