Money and Finance:
Open Your Mind to Discount Shopping and Save Your Money!

We all need to buy things to survive.  Even if you live the most simplistic lifestyle, you still need to make purchases for food, clothing, and other supplies at one time or another.  And then there are those of us who simply love to shop.  Either way, you can get a great deal more for your money – and hopefully have some leftover when all is said and done – if you learn how to discount shop.

Indeed, until somewhat recently, there has been a bit of a social stigma attached to discount shopping.  The phrase “you get what you pay for” had a lot of meaning for a while.  However, if you are a savvy bargain shopper, you don’t need to have cheap quality because you’re paying a cheap price.  After all, it’s not really a discount or a bargain unless you’re paying less for something of value.  It’s all in knowing what you’re doing, and putting a bit of planning into your shopping.

The following are some great techniques to make sure that you always pay the best price for the things you want:

  • Always check fliers.  There is a reason that you get all of those advertisements in your newspaper or just bundled at your door every Sunday morning.  It’s because local businesses want to share their sales and discount opportunities with you.  Take the time to check them out with your morning coffee and you’ll find that you can pay much less for some of your regular purchase, and you may even discover some new places to shop that will offer you great discount opportunities on a regular basis.

  • Shop outlet stores – frequently.  This doesn’t mean that you need to make a purchase every time you go out.  But you should head to outlet stores, overstock stores, and even factory second stores to see what’s available.  These stores have something new at least every week – if not more frequently – so find out when the stores get their new shipments of items (and when they hit the bins and shelves) and make a point of heading out on those days.

  • Buy lots of items off-season to get the clearance bargains.  Most stores would far rather sell things for a very low price than have to find some place to store their goods for over half a year.  So do your shopping at the end of seasons so that you’ll be prepared way in advance.  Seasonal items such as bathing suits, winter coats and boots, barbecue grills, outdoor toys, and holiday items are always in the very deepest discounts at the end of their seasons.  Time things right and you’ll save a fortune.

  • Use coupons.  You may not have thought of yourself as a coupon clipper before, but when you see how much you can save every month or every year just by bringing in that tiny piece of newsprint, you’ll have the scissors ready when the fliers come in.

  • Shop second hand.  Garage sales, yard sales, consignment shops, flea markets, and other second hand stores (such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army Store) can offer tremendous treasures for only pennies.  Jewelry, clothing, art, kitchen wares, movies, and everything else you can imagine are all available at these stores for rock bottom prices. Go often as things are always changing in these stores and you’ll never know what’ll come in next week.  Remember that some stores, such as Goodwill, also often have a “50% off day” a few times every month, so you can save even more by watching the websites for the extra savings days.
