Career Success:
Things to Consider When Trying Something New at Work By Ellen Corsi
When you’ve been doing a job long enough, the routine can become rather trying – even when it is a job that you would usually enjoy very much. The monotony and boredom that you may feel in your dream job is usually a sign that you need to open your mind to new ideas to keep things appealing and give yourself a feeling of progression in your job.
There are many things you can do to make changes on the job. These include:
- Environment - changing the way your workspace is laid out
- Relationships - working to build stronger professional ties with people at work as well as clients
- Policy - changing the way things are done
- Attitude - altering the way you look at the various aspects of your job
When you are making your changes, keep an open mind - especially when it comes to the feedback of others. Remember that while you may feel that you know a great deal about what you do, the suggestions that others can provide will often give you insight into a whole new way of getting things done.
Furthermore, you need to remember that not everybody is as open minded as you are trying to be. Some people struggle with change. As you make changes that will impact others, you need to be prepared to explain exactly why the changes are being made, and how they can go about working within those changes. Make yourself available for feedback, comments, and support.
You may be feeling very motivated right now, but you should resist the urge to dive in head first without planning. When it comes to the workplace, everything you do should be carefully thought out so you don’t end up doing more harm than good. Remember, keeping your mind open to positive new changes isn’t the same thing as rushing into a change for the sake of doing something different.
