Career Success:
Getting Started on a Brand New Career

It happens to a lot of us. Sometimes, we’re just not interested in our current career track anymore. Loss of interest, a low pay, an uncertain future, or even company downsizing can make a lot of us want to change careers in the near future. As frightening as this can seem, it can also be the most important, most positive decision that we make in our lives.

Changing careers is becoming much more common these days, with the majority of people making several career track changes over their working lifetimes. Use the following steps to help ease yourself through your career change process, and make your fresh start an effective one.

  • Look into what you like and what you don’t like. Many people change their careers because they find that they don’t like where they are. So as much as it is important to identify what appeals to you to set you in the right direction, you will also want to find out what doesn’t appeal to you so that you can avoid it in the future.

  • Research different career possibilities. Once you know what you like and don’t like, it’s time to look into the different potential careers that will cater to your tastes. There are many different resources online that can help you with this

  • Examine your transferable skills. As much as you may consider updating your education so that you will be better qualified for a new career track, you will also want to identify the skills that you already have that will help better your candidacy in a new career. Just because you’ll be doing something different doesn’t mean that the education and experience that you already have will be meaningless.

  • Train and educate. Find out if you need certifications or additional skills and knowledge for your new career track and then seek to obtain those. Reputable online colleges can be the key to obtaining the education and training you need within the boundaries of your current schedule.

  • Network as much as you can. Most of us know that one way to get a job in a new career is to know the people in the industry. Find out about different companies, industry practices, and people with hiring influence.
