Personal Growth:
Getting Started With Better Health by Ending a Bad Habit
A lot of times in our lives, making a good healthy start means putting an end to something else. Nothing is more common in January – the month of the New Year’s Resolution – than a vow to quit smoking. This year, make a great start by kicking that bad habit for good. Don’t just say you’ll do it, actually do it!
Indeed, quitting smoking is much easier said than done. It can be one of the most challenging things that you face in your lifetime. But once you’ve accomplished it the benefits will certainly make all of the effort you’ve put in well worth your while. The key is to do it right from the very start, to avoid failed attempts and losing your motivation.
Remember that you will have a much better chance of having your efforts work effectively if you use proven quitting smoking tools along with your techniques. This means that your quit smoking method will be greatly assisted if you use counseling, nicotine replacement therapies (such as in gums and patches), laser treatments, or medications to help your efforts along.
Keep in mind that no matter what tools you use, you will also need willpower and a strong drive to achieve your quitting goal.
You should also use the following four steps to help you out:
- Pick a day to quit, and stick to it. Your deadline will help your resolve.
- Choose your techniques ahead of time and have your supplies ready. Whether you’ll be wearing the patch, drinking lots of water, chewing gum, or combining several techniques together, make sure that you have everything you need, and you know what you’re strategy is.
- Put your plan into practice on the date you decided, and don’t break your vow to yourself. Don’t smoke. Just don’t do it. Review your plan often, to remind yourself of what needs to be done and how you’re going to do it. Reviewing your plan will also renew your determination.
- .Celebrate your successes. Reward yourself for different “anniversaries” and achievements. On your first day, make your favorite meal. After a week, do something you truly enjoy such as going out to dinner or taking yourself out to a movie. Make sure to reward your successes to keep your motivation high, and remind yourself that you’re doing a great job for yourself and those you love.
