Kitchen Safety - Because You Are What You Eat
We often think of our kitchen as a place to nourish our family. For some families, the kitchen is a gathering place full of warm memories that last a lifetime. Many of us think about making great meals, and we try to feed our families foods that will help them grow and keep them healthy. However, our lives have become more hectic, and we often skip over the things that are meant to keep us safe. Without proper care, the kitchen can become a nightmare. There are some easy things anyone can do to keep a kitchen as safe as possible.
Wash Your Hands - It seems simple enough, but many don't wash their hands enough while cooking. Many think to do it before and after, but don't do it in the middle of preparation. Things such as eggs and meats often have bacteria that can contaminate other foods, and this often happens because the hands are not washed in between handling different items. Keep your sink free of clutter so you can wash your hands with hot, soapy water as needed while cooking and baking.
Disinfect! - Cleaning is important, we all know that, but many do not go far enough. Find a great antibacterial cleaner to use each time the surfaces of the kitchen are cleaned. Don't forget to scrub your cutting board in between each different food (plastic is best) and to run it through the dishwasher after scrubbing with hot, soapy water. The inside of the microwave can be a problem, so it should be wiped down after each use. Paper towels are great for this type of cleaning, because the germs are thrown away with them.
Sponges and Cloths - Many have the habit of using the same dishcloth or sponge for days on end without cleaning it. This is one of the most common ways people spread germs and bacteria around the kitchen. Use a new one each day, and take the extra step of washing them in hot water. Some like to put their sponge through the dishwasher each day for extra protection.
Use More Plates - Have you ever taken raw meat out to the grill on a plate, and then turned around and put the cooked meat on the same plate? This should never be done because the raw juice from the meat is still on the plate. Always put cooked foods on a clean plate and rinse the other off and put it in the dishwasher. The same principle should be applied while cooking indoors as well.
Thaw Foods The Right Way - Some like to leave meat out on the counter so that it can thaw faster. This can be dangerous. Instead, get it out early and leave it in the refrigerator. If you must thaw quickly, you can use your microwave. It won't be perfect, but it is better than leaving the meat out on the counter overnight. Thawed meat should be stored in the refrigerator if it is not going to be cooked immediately.
Use a Meat Thermometer - Always use a thermometer to be sure that meat is thoroughly cooked. Raw meat is one of the biggest reasons why people get sick from prepared foods.
