Achieving Job Security Through Your Ability to Get Another Job!

It may sound strange, but job security can rely heavily on your ability to secure another position. Decades ago, people began a career with one company, and would then retire from the same place when they reached retirement age. Though there are still some people who have a work career such as this, it is becoming rare. Many people like to seek new opportunities, but for the most part, the rules of business have changed. Your current job might not last forever, but you will feel more secure if you know you can find another rather easily.

Learning to do your job well, coming up with new ideas, and staying on top of what is going on with your current company are all smart moves to make yourself a valued employee. However, this is not going to give job security like it use to. Instead, a person has to be smart about their career and where they may have to go one day. Many great employees find themselves out of work because of downsizing and layoffs, even if the company found great value in them. Some even say that job security within one company is a thing of the past.

You should continue to do your job and do it well, but you also have to keep up with the rest of the world. This means taking time to learn new techniques and finding new information that can help you stay up-to-date with those who are freshly emerging from college. They don't have your experience, but they do have the latest information. Attend workshops and conferences related to your career so you aren't falling behind in the industry.

Don't forget to network. You may not be looking for a new job at the present time, but you should always keep your options open. Form relationships with others in your field, especially those at other companies. If you suddenly find that you are out of work, these contacts may know about something that would be perfect for you. Networking works in both directions, so be sure to pass the word along if you know of something within your own company that might be opening up. These favors can pay off in the future.

Though these things can help with your current position, and might even earn you a promotion, they are also essential to stay alive in a world where jobs are not nearly as secure as they once were. Though losing one job through downsizing is not fun, it will not be as hard if you know you are ready to find a new job, and that you have the skills, latest information, and contacts to find something wonderful.
