Actions to Take for Better Personal Safety
There are some basic things that everyone does at home to stay safe, but there are other things that many don't think to do, and these are often the cause of problems. You may lock your doors, but do you lock your windows? You may know to stay away from strangers in certain areas, but do you know what to do if someone begins to bother you? Many have a vague idea, but they don't have enough knowledge to keep safe. When it comes to personal safety, you can never have too much information. Here are some important tips that can help.
At Home - Most keep the doors locked at night, but do not think it is as important during the day. There are many thieves that come into homes during the day while they think people are working. If you hear someone in your home at any time, you can make noise and turn on lights and talk out loud to a companion, even if you are alone. This will usually cause them to flee. If you don't feel comfortable with that, you can hide until you think they are gone. Call for emergency help as soon as you can.
If you come home to the signs of a break in, you should never go into your house. Walk away as fast as you can and find somewhere safe to call for help. The intruder might still be in your home. Also remember that you can avoid a break in by keeping your name neutral in public listings. Use your initials if you are a woman living alone. Never respond to threatening or harassing phone messages. Simply hang up or put the phone down and walk away. Do not respond or you will encourage them.
Away From Home - Though some feel safe walking anywhere, it is always a good idea to have some protection. There are personal alarms that make a lot of noise if activated, and they are very good at scaring away attackers. Keys are always a great weapon if one is needed for self defense. Carry a small set in your hands when you are walking alone, even if you are familiar with the area. Never take shortcuts through deserted places, and remain on public and well-traveled walkways. Have a good hold on your purse, or you might just lose it.
While Driving - Always have your doors locked when driving or when stopped. Keep them locked while out of the car, even if you are just running into the store for a minute. Never count cash or balance a checkbook while sitting in a car. Get in the car and go. It is a good idea to park in a well lit and public area. If you see someone sitting alone in the car next to yours, and there are no others around, do not go to your car. Go inside and find someone to walk you to your car.
If you think someone is following you while you are driving, do not drive home. You do not want to lead someone to your house. Instead, drive somewhere else where there are a lot of people. If you have a mobile phone, call for help. Stick to main roads, and drive to the nearest police station if you know where to find it.
