Home & Family Life:
Honesty in the Family – No Masks Allowed

We all wear masks for different times in our lives.  For example, we don’t behave the same way when we’re at work than we do at home. But the difference is that when you come home to see your family, your mask should come off with your hat and your shoes.

Your family is your support group - the people who should know you to your very core.  If you are to lead a happy life, you need to have people with whom you can be your true self – this should be your family.

You’ll also want your family to feel the same way.  After all, it’s hard to open up to people when you don’t feel that they are opening up to you.

If you haven’t really been opening up with each other very much lately, there are many things you can do to bring the habit back into your lives. They include the following:

  1. Find a good place to start – you want to make a comfortable habit of being yourself, not feel like you’re sitting in a regimented therapy group.  So don’t just make a list of questions and start reading them from a clip board, try to connect with a real conversation.  Think about linking something from the past with something you’re currently doing and talking about that.  For example, when you’re doing something together such as washing dishes, ask about a favorite meal to make in the near future, or what to do for an upcoming holiday – don’t forget to relate to it without taking away from the value of your family member’s input.

  2. Be specific – if you ask a broad question and receive a broad answer, look for details.  Be curious, and ask questions.  This will help the conversation grow naturally and will show your genuine interest – but be careful not to force things.

  3. Hold in doubts – remember that everybody has their own version of a story and their own memories and perspective.  Talking to someone isn’t about getting the story right, it’s discussing the way things went according to the way your family member remembers and expresses it.

  4. Don’t bury discomfort – if you aren’t comfortable or ready to discuss a topic with a family member, gently and directly tell that person.  You may find that as time passes, it’s easier to discuss certain topics – or perhaps there are some things you’d just rather keep to yourself, and that’s just fine too.

  5. Pay attention – remember that your family may not always be ready to pour out their hearts and deepest feelings.  We all have times when we feel chatty and other times when we just don’t feel like talking it up.  Look for certain cues to let you know whether your pursuit is appreciated at that precise moment.

  6. Don’t forget to appreciate the ones you love – the words “thank you”, “that’s great”, “love you”, and other similar terms – when said genuinely – will go a very long way in your relationship with your family.  Use them often.
