Make Your Work a Better Place

Just because you're at work doesn't mean that you can't be happy and naturally feel positive. Nor does it mean that if your workplace isn't currently all that happy, that you can't do something about it.

There are many ways for you to make your workplace a more pleasant place to be for yourself and everyone around you. They're quite simple, but they do take some consistency and perseverance.

The following are a few of the techniques that you can apply all by yourself, which will spread a more positive outlook among your employees, team members, colleagues, staff, and other people within your workplace.

  • When someone is speaking with you, no matter what the topic, make sure that you show genuine interest in what is being said. This is one of the simplest, and yet the most effective way to encourage the people around you. They feel cared for, important, and supported. For this to be effective, though, you need to be genuinely interested, not just pretending. Show this interest by asking questions, making encouraging comments, and paying attention. Follow up on topics when applicable, and they'll know that you truly care.

  • Acknowledge what is important to the other people around you. This provides them with affirmation and validation in their own tasks. Deep down, everybody wants to be acknowledged, and whether you like your job or not, it feels good when someone tells you that you've done well or that you've made a difference.

  • Use the words "well done" and "good work". Use these words when only when they are deserved, but never miss an opportunity to use them when they've been earned. These are among the most encouraging and motivational words you can speak, and make even more difference than "keep going".

  • As much as "well done" and "good work" are important, so is "thank you". This common courtesy should be regularly practiced at your workplace, so be sure to lead the way in this effort. It's simple good manners and makes the environment much more pleasing.

Overall, a happy workplace is one where everybody feels wanted, important, and validated. Give encouragement regularly and try to keep your own positive attitude. People will pick up on it through your presence alone.
