As soon as you sign up for an online master degree, it's time to start thinking about how you're going to handle the work. Not just the deadlines and the pressure, but also the actual work. Where are you going to do your schoolwork and do it well? When you're a traditional student, you might have a desk where you can do your assignments and listen to the teacher, but when you're online, it's a little bit different. In order to make sure you're doing the most you can for your masters degree, here's what you need to have at home.

Make a Separate Space

Just as you would when setting up a home business, you need to make sure you have a separate area devoted to your online master degree. If you share a computer with the rest of the household, you will want to create a box or a bag that contains all of your necessary files and notes in one place. This way, you're not going to lose anything and your 'desk' can be transported to anywhere that's free. If you can find a room in your home or apartment with a door that can shut, that's all the better. Even a corner away from the high traffic areas is a good place to focus when you need to study or to write a paper.

Technology Necessities

At the very least, you need a modern desktop computer that can connect to the Internet for your online master degree. This will allow you to access your virtual classroom, plus it will allow you to email your assignments and any questions to the instructor. While a dial up modem will work, a DSL or a cable modem is far more efficient. You won't have to spend hours waiting for the Internet to connect with these options - everything will start immediately. You will also need a printer to help you print out assignments for easy viewing, plus a solid ergonomic keyboard and mouse to help you easily type assignments and other projects.

Backing Up Your Work

Your computer should also have some sort of way to backup the work that you do. The options are:

• A separate drive - Some computers have two drives so you can save your work on both in case one crashes.

• A USB port - By using a flash drive in this port, you can save your work to the drive as well as the computer, helping you have multiple copies. The flash drive is convenient because you can then take your work with you wherever you go.

• A free standing separate hard drive - Sold at local computer supply stores, these USB using drives will hook up to your main computer and provide additional space.

CDs and DVDs - If you have a disc burner on your computer, save your work to CDs and DVDs from time to time. Using rewritable CDs is best.

Getting an online master degree is easy when you have the right tools and Almeda University makes sure you do.
